Profile

RL Marlow Consulting LLC provides FPGA and USRP design services and expertise. Founded in 2017 by Ryan Marlow and now based out of his home office in Durham, NC. Ryan has worked directly with Ettus Research/NI and their customers. Some examples of this work: wrapped proprietary ip cores into the RFNoC framework to run on a USRP device, developed custom RFNoC blocks that meet customers' needs, devised multi-USRP schemes to control multiple devices for MIMO tasks, and porting a custom SDR platform into the UHD environment to send/receive commands and data samples to/from GNU Radio. Ryan has directly contributed to the UHD github codebase. Some applications of his DSP work includes: MIMO radar system, beamforming algorithm development and implementation, & signal detection using high speed FFT and frequency sweeping. In addition to DSP related work, Ryan has worked in hardware-level cybersecurity and custom EDA tools that has given him a deeper understanding of low level FPGA architecture.

Skills and Expertise

Past Experience

Owner | Summer 2017 - Present
R L Marlow Consulting LLC, Durham, NC

Freelance consultant. See above profile and skills/expertise section for more details about some work I've done.

Founder - Lead Developer | July 2015 - Spring 2017
Consolidated Logic Incorporated, Blacksburg, VA

FPGA design expertise and commercializing research originated from CCM lab at Virginia Tech. The primary purpose of the company was to develop a product that would speed up and abstract the FPGA compilation process. Eventually, the company pivoted to consulting work with Ettus Research in support of USRP and RFNoC development.

Research Assistant | July 2012 - August 2014 & September 2014 - September 2015
Virginia Tech, Configurable Computing Lab, Blacksburg, VA

Continued development of a productivity tool to rapidly compile FPGA SDR/DSP applications from GNU Radio. Backend rapid compiler built on top of TORC (Tools for Open Reconfigurable Computing). Transitioned the tool from Xilinx Virtex-5 to Zynq (and 7-series) and developed new features. After completion of a thesis, continued research on this work as a research assistant in the lab.

Radio DJ and Engineering Staff Volunteer | Spring 2012 - Spring 2017
WUVT FM 90.7 Blacksburg, VA

Hosted a variety of radio shows (Hickory Dickory Dock, Ryan's Radio Show Great Job!, Hot Dad Happy Hour Great Job!) over the years on Virginia Tech's college radio station. Troubleshooting broken equipment around the on campus studio and the 6.5 kW transmitter site.

Cyber Cohort Intern | Summer 2010 & 2011
Booz Allen Hamilton, Herndon, VA

Developed custom SharePoint apps to display information with Google data visualization API (2010). Worked with BGP routing tables to map/analyze the internet (2011).
